VAT is set
to rise on July 1, from 10 % to 13 %, before reaching its final target
of 15 per cent on January 1, 2003, brining Cyprus closer to integration
and full membership within Europe.

on consumer goods taxation. Effective immediately.

Changing to the new telephone numbering system.
The transitional
period for telephone numbering throughout Cyprus comes to an end today.
99 and not 09 will now precede all mobile numbers.
All national numbers will be precede by 2 and then the area code, as follow,
Paphos now 26, Limassol is now 25, Larnaca is now 23 and so on for each
respective town.
When dialling
to Cyprus from abroad, you do not drop the 2 prefix, unlike the 0 used
to be. So to get through successfully you must now dial the country code
00 357 and then the whole of the telephone numer including the area code.

The rules
regarding selling second hand duty free have been under the microscope
recently. Legislation passed by the Cypriot authorities to impose full
taxation on second hand car sales met with huge uproar and the decision
has been reversed, pending review until the end of the year.
When the change does finally take place it will mean that anybody wishing
to buy a second hand car will have to pay local market prices. There is
currently a huge difference between duty free and duty paid prices, so
if
you want to take advantage of the situation you should get your skates
on.
New cars are still available duty free to those that qualify for the tax
exemption, however if you were to sell your car in the future you would
have to take account of the tax and include it in the sale price. You
would be liable to pay this tax at the point of sale.

Cyprus has
made progress in its 12-year cheese campaign to get Halloumi recognised
as a purely Cypriot product. Halloumi has been successively registered
as an exclusive Cypriot cheese in Britain, America, Greece and Canada.
However, the rest of the EU, New Zealand, Australia and Brazil are still
in need of persuasion.
Halloumi is now a registered trademark for the exclusive Cypriot cheese.
A quarter of all Halloumi exports are earmarked for the UK market alone.
We say it’s a sweet victory for the spongy cheese.

The roads
in our region are always a topic in the public spotlight. With the onset
of the peak tourist season upon us, there is a major decline in road works
activity in the main tourist areas.
The main roads in Kato Paphos are being re-surfaced and work on the installation
of the Paphos sewage system is being continued in less busy areas.
