Changing phone numbers

The Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (CYTA) is introducing eight-digit phone numbers on Saturday, 1st of December 2001 as part of its new national numbering plan.
Area codes -- 02, 05, 06, etc., will be replaced with 22, 24, 26, etc., respectively.
Nicosia numbers, for example, will start with 22, and Paphos numbers will start with 26.
All eight digits must be dialed, wherever you are calling from.
Mobile phone number will change from 09 to 99.
People calling from overseas should dial the international code 357 followed by the new eight-digit number.
The existing system is still running in parallel to the new system and will do so until June 1, 2002. After which all calls to the old numbers will be forwarded to a recorded announcement for a period of 6 months.

New airport for Paphos and new flight routes

A completely new Paphos airport is scheduled to be built by December 2004.
Cyprus is enjoying a tourism boom with a record 2.7 million visitors in 2000, this is projected to rise to 4 million by 2005.

Helios Airways will begin chartering flights from Paphos to Tel Aviv at the beginning of December 2001. The new route will allow visitors to come directly to Paphos, previously all flights from Israel to Cyprus were via Larnaca.

New hospital in Nicosia

European Investment Bank issued a loan of 50 million Euro for the new general hospital to be built in Nicosia.
The hospital is due to be completed in July 2003.
Some of the services it will provide are cardiology, nephrology, neurosurgery, general surgery, and an intensive care unit. There will be over 400 patients’ beds in 18 nursing units.

On driving

Parliament has been debating whether to ban smoking whilst driving.

Effective from the 1st of January 2002, new cars imported to Cyprus must have rear seat belts fitted.
Effective from the 1st of July 2002 the wearing of rear seat belts will become compulsory, failure to comply will result in a fine of CYP50 per person, whether adults or children.

Paphos to Polis and Kato Paphos freeways

The freeway contract has been awarded to a Limassol based company to be built from Timi area (near Paphos airport) to Polis. We will keep you posted when the project starts and give you the exact route.

The majority of the work required for the Kato Paphos sewerage system is in place beneath the forthcoming freeway which will connect the Tomb of the Kings area and the A1 freeway starting at the Leda Gardens roundabout to Geroskipou and the Paphos-Limassol freeway.
The anticipated route begins at the junction of Apostolou Pavlou Avenue and Tombs of the Kings road (near Begonia garden centre) runs past the Ayia Marina church then passing the Pafiessa hotel, continuing past Paradise and Jasmine Gardens, the Animal Sanctuary, Paphos Gardens, where it will join A1 Kato-Paphos roundabout.
There is also a proposal under consideration for the continuation of this road all the way to Paphos airport. We’ll give you more details as soon as we know.
