CYPRUS NEEDS A PROPER LANDMARK.
Tourism Minister Nicos Rolandis was quoted as saying: "Tourism in Cyprus
is faceless. Egypt has the Pyramids, London has the Tower of London, New
York has the Statue of Liberty. I believe Cyprus needs an identity and that
identity should be Aphrodite,". "The Great Wall of China, Taj
Mahal, Eiffel Tower and Statue of Liberty all have a certain size, so we
have to compete with that."We applaud the vision of the Minister and
high-ranking officials who seem determined to give the project the green
light. The statue of the goddess of love Aphrodite will be constructed on
a concrete platform base, built in the sea. The statue will be big and is
likely to be located adjacent to Kouklia village and Aphrodite’s temple.
This is a strategic location, in so far as it is directly on the flight
path for aircraft landing at Paphosinternational airport, it will be a great
spectacle from a birds eye point of view and just as much so, when viewed
from the coast.

THE 30TH CYPRUS RALLY
The fifth of Fourteen rounds of this year’s FIA World Rally Championship
will take place in Cyprus from the 18th to the 21st of April.
The Cyprus Rally organisers are determined to retain the event’s unblemished
safety record. A new safety system will be instigated. The ‘GO GREEN’ philosophy
is simple.
Green is for safe and Red is for danger. All hazardous spots and stages will
be roped off with red
tape and netting, they will be patrolled by security personnel. The areas
which are safe for spectators will be roped off with green tape and signs
will direct people tothese spots. In addition, barriers will be used to
make ‘green footpaths’ for people to walk safely to each stage.
A brand new tracking method will be used for the first time at the Cyprus
Rally, it is anticipated that information including results will be generated
faster than before and enhance rally safety. Superstars participating include
present and former World Rally Champions Colin McRae, Richard Burns, Tommi
Makinen and Marcus Gronholm.
The Cyprus rally passes thru Paphos and the teams will set up overnightcamps
on the land adjacent to the Sodap wine factory.

ROAD WORKS AND THE PAPHOS SEWAGE SYSTEM
Road works and the installation of the Paphos sewage system are still in
full swing. There are traffic light controlled contra flows at Tombs of
the Kings and on Apostolos Pavlou Avenue in the old town. Anybody visiting
Paphos for the first time, be aware, since the roadwork’s signage and standards
of safety do not conform to European standards at the moment.

PROGRESS REPORT ON THE PAPHOS TO LIMASSOL FREEWAY
The Paphos to Limassol Freeway is progressing well. The eastbound carriageway
is still operating on a contra flow basis on the bridge near the birthplace
of Aphrodite. The structure of the westbound bridge is nearly completed,
with approximately a 40 metre stretch remaining to be filled.
Once this is done the road will be surfaced and should be operational around
July of this year.

‘GETTING THE HUMP’
The Paphos department of works and local municipalities are installing road
humps or “sleeping-policemen” if you prefer, at most schools in the Paphos
area. A welcome move.
